Terribly interesting

My children began asking me about how we survived the previous pandemic. I was born in 1978 and I have never lived through anything like that before. I have no experience to share. I studied history at school and I know about the plague and the Spanish flu. I have seen apocalyptic sci-fi films about an unknown evil invading the world. But I don’t know anything about the virus that attacked humanity in 2020. My fears are fed on by images from old books and screenplays. I don’t know if I need to do anything, I have no idea how long we will stay isolated, or what will happen to our society after the pandemic. The fear alternates with doubt; my days resemble each other. I’m locked up in a cramped apartment with my family. During the first days of the quarantine, I used to go outside late in the evening, trying to avoid the confinement. That solitude gave me some relief from the stress I experienced during the day, but the darkness was closing in on me, making me anxious. When the self-isolation conditions were made stricter, I began to look for freedom within myself. I started to wonder what the virus could look like—and began arranging improvised still-life compositions, combining different household objects together. Daylight rendered my creations nonthreatening, turning coronavirus into a buzzword, a glamorous little thing. But the combination of dissimilar materials did not allow for this effect to last long. Playfulness and disarray constantly followed each other. I experimented with trying on different outfits, which were completely irrelevant in my past life, hoping to take my mind to another dimension. Hoping that my view of what was really happening would also change. It felt odd wearing these clothes. I was feeling uncomfortable in front of the camera; I could not control the process. My place in it had always been different. But it was also fascinating in a way—I felt more and more like watching a movie: when you’re terrified, but also wondering what will happen next…
